Contradiction 1

A Corporation needs to have a larger purpose (to run successfully) than just to make money

The Contradiction:

Let us consider a businessman whose sole purpose is to make money in the market. He produces goods, which he has to sell to make money. For being able to sell he has to create value for the buyer. If he is creating value for the buyer, he is actually serving him. Which means he is creating value for the society and hence intentionally/unintentionally serving the society.

So, what's the big deal about the statement above? Why do corporates keep searching for that purpose and aligning themselves with it?

Well, a corporation is run by many individuals and each person is limited to his/her own scope of view. In his/her routine work life, it is impossible for everyone to be comfortable with the fact that his/her own interest lies in the interest of the organization. More often than not, people adopt such a narrow view.

If these individuals start acting out of pure self-interest than there will be no one left to take care of the interest of the organization as a whole and hence it may fall.

While a higher purpose like serving the society in a particular way, is a subtle way of keeping the person goal oriented.

That's my solution to this contradiction .... what's yours?
